ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: The United States said that Washington was aware of Pakistan’s economic crisis and wanted to see the south asian country in an economically sustainable position.

During a news briefing in Washington, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that Pakistan was in contact with global economic institutions and the US was supportive of where it can be of the Pakistani partners.

US stance on Pakistan’s economic position

Ned Price said that technical problems were discussed with Pakistan at different levels.

When asked that Pakistan has less than 5 billion dollars in its forex reserves and if the US paying any attention to or planning to give some sort of debt relief to the country, he said these are the challenges that “we are attuned to”. I know that Pakistan has been working with the IM and international financial institutions. The US wants to see Pakistan in an economically stable position. Those conversations, as I understand them, are ongoing. The US is supportive where we can be of our friendly Pakistani partners, but ultimately these conversations are between international financial institutions and Pakistan.

When asked at this critical juncture, was the US at the government level giving any suggestions for Pakistan to take some immediate steps to improve the economy, Ned Price said that these conversations with the Pakistani partners often do entail technical problems. “Often times these are addressed between the Department of the Treasury and our partners. But Pakistan’s macroeconomic stability was a topic of conversation between the US State Department and the White House, the Treasury Department, among others.”
