AL-MUKALLA: The US and UK militaries conducted strikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen’s Taiz province on Wednesday morning, hours after US Central Command confirmed the destruction of a new batch of Houthi drones and missiles.
The Houthi-run Al-Masirah news outlet reported that the strikes targeted Taiz but did not specify the exact locations.
These strikes are the latest in a series of actions by the US and UK in response to Houthi attacks on ships in key international shipping lanes off Yemen.
The US military had earlier announced the destruction of a drone and two ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis over the Red Sea. These projectiles were aimed at US-led coalition ships and other naval and commercial vessels in the crucial maritime route.
Since November, the Houthis have targeted ships in the Red Sea, Bab Al-Mandab Strait, Gulf of Aden, and Indian Ocean, and have recently claimed attacks on vessels in the Mediterranean.
The militia has justified these actions as part of a campaign to pressure Israel to halt its military operations in Gaza, which have left 39700 Palestinians, mostly, children and women, dead.
Al-Masirah claimed that the Houthis have attacked 170 ships since November, including 41 Israeli vessels, 72 American ships, 12 British ships, and 45 other foreign ships, alleging violations of their ban on travel to Israel.
They also claimed responsibility for hitting 49 warships, including several US destroyers.
