US Troops Attacked Four Times in Iraq, Syria Within Hours

BAGHDAD: US troops were attacked 4 times in Iraq and Syria on Thursday with armed drones and rockets, but there were no casualties or damage to infrastructure, a US army official said. Reuters citied an unnamed US official as saying that US and coalition troops were attacked at two areas in northeastern Syria with several rockets and a drone.

In Iraq, several one-way drones were fired at the Ain Al-Asad air base in Baghdad and a drone was also fired at a base housing US personnel near Irbil airport in northern Iraq. Reuters reported that a group calling itself the Islamic Resistance in Iraq had claimed responsibility for attacks on those sites earlier in the day.

The strikes come the day following the US struck an armed group in an attack that the group said had left 8 men dead. The strike was denounced by the Iraqi government as escalatory and a clear violation of Iraq’s sovereignty. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said on Wednesday that the recent US escalation was unsafe and confirmed that it also violated the sovereignty of Iraq. He made the remarks during his talks with the US envoy to Iraq, Alina Romanowski, Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

The Iraqi FM conveyed Baghdad’s disapproval of the recent US attacks against different sites without his government’s knowledge.

US officials stated American forces had struck militants groups after an escalation in their assaults that have targeted American and international forces dozens of times since Oct. 17. As of Thursday, there had been about 36 attacks in Iraq and around 37 in Syria, the US army official stated.

Earlier, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said that since October 17 till today, they were tracking that there have been about 55 attacks on US troops. There have been around 27 assaults against US troops in Iraq and about 28 attacks in Syria,” Sabrina Singh added. According to Sabrina Singh as many as 59 US personnel were injured in these attacks.
