Kyiv: The United States will back Ukraine until its security is “guaranteed”, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on a trip to Kyiv on Tuesday, hours after Russian military claimed further advances in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

The trip follows the recent approval by the US Congress of a $61-billion financial aid package for Ukraine, unlocking crucial support for the country’s defense efforts. Speaking at a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Blinken emphasized that assistance was already on its way, with more to follow, providing much-needed reinforcement against ongoing Russian aggression.

Zelensky expressed gratitude for the aid, stressing its importance in the face of the current crisis. However, he urged for an acceleration in the delivery of supplies, citing the urgent need for swift action amidst escalating hostilities. Air defense was highlighted as a priority, with Zelensky specifically requesting two Patriot batteries for the Kharkiv region, which has been a focal point of Russian advances.

Blinken’s visit marks his fourth trip to Kyiv since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, underscoring the United States’ unwavering support for its ally. Following his meeting with Zelensky, Blinken also met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

Meanwhile, on the ground in Ukraine, the situation remains dire. Russian forces continue to make strategic gains in the Kharkiv region, forcing thousands to flee and prompting Kyiv to mobilize reinforcements. Reports of civilian casualties and widespread destruction highlight the human toll of the conflict.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have deployed counterattacks, although challenges persist as Russian troops maintain high ground and continue to shell border villages. Despite the escalation, Ukrainian officials assert that there is no imminent threat to Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city.
