WASHINGTON: The White House said on Monday that the US will not back away from its deployment to Syria, where it is fighting the remnants of Daesh, despite assaults on US troops there last week by a militia. A one-way attack drone hit a US base in Syria on Thursday, killing a US contractor, hurting another, and injuring five US soldiers.

That prompted US reciprocal air strikes and exchanges of fire that a Syrian war monitoring group said killed 3 Syrian soldiers, eleven Syrian fighters linked with pro-government militias and 5 non-Syrian fighters linked with the government.  White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said he had no information about any additional assaults in the last 36 hours but signaled, “We are going to stay alert.”

The spokesperson also mentioned to Biden’s remarks on Friday, in which he warned Tehran that the US would act forcefully to defend and protect the US citizens.  He said that the US mission against Daesh would continue in Syria. He said that they are not going to be deterred by these attacks in Syria.

Syrian ministry for foreign affairs on Sunday denounced US strikes, adding the US had lied regarding what was targeted and promising to “end the US occupation” of its territory. The ministry also condemned the US strikes, alleging US soldiers of targeting “civilian” sites. Reports said that there are around 900 US soldiers in Syria.
