WASHINGTON: The United States (US) on Saturday announced that it would maintain close coordination with its Group of Seven (G7) allies in response to the unfolding crisis in Russia, where a mutiny by the Wagner mercenary group has taken place. State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller emphasized that the US support for Ukraine will not waver.
In a statement, Miller stated, “The United States will stay in close coordination with Allies and partners as the situation continues to develop.” He further reiterated the US commitment to supporting Ukraine, indicating that their stance remains unchanged.
Meanwhile, in a phone call between Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Erdogan expressed full support for the steps taken by the Russian leadership in response to the armed insurrection by the Wagner mercenary group. The Kremlin confirmed Erdogan’s support in a statement, highlighting the solidarity between the two countries.
G7 Foreign Ministers Discuss Russia Crisis
Meanwhile, the foreign affairs ministers of the G7 countries held discussions on the situation in Russia. EU diplomatic chief Josep Borrell mentioned the exchange of views in a tweet, without providing further details. German Foreign Affairs Minister Annalena Baerbock also engaged in discussions with her G7 counterparts regarding the crisis.
