WASHINGTON: In a recent development, US military jets conducted airstrikes on Iran-backed groups operating in Syria’s eastern Deir Ezzor province.

This region has become a hotbed of conflict, marked by clashes between Arab tribes and the notorious terrorist organization PKK/YPG. Local sources, as reported by Anadolu Agency, provided insights into the situation on the ground.

According to these sources, the Iran-backed groups had amassed in an area extending from Abu Kamal in the eastern part of Deir Ezzor to the Euphrates River. US warplanes took targeted action against two military vehicles in the vicinity, an incident corroborated by opposition groups within Syria.

The result of the airstrikes was devastating, with reports indicating casualties among the occupants of the vehicles and a subsequent explosion of ammunition within them. This event underscores the ongoing tensions in the region, where Iran and Iranian-backed terrorist groups have established a significant presence, particularly in areas like Abu Kamal, Muhsan, and al-Mayadeen in eastern Deir Ezzor.

It is worth noting that the central and western parts of Deir Ezzor province were reclaimed by the Assad regime in November 2017, with the assistance of Iranian-backed forces and Russian support. This operation succeeded in driving out the ISIS terror group, but the region continues to be plagued by conflict and instability.

The US airstrikes come on the heels of a deadly rocket attack by the PKK/YPG terrorist group, which left at least six people dead and eight others wounded in Syria. The PKK/YPG, still maintaining a presence in northern areas of the Manbij district, launched an assault on a village in Jarablus, resulting in these casualties.

In retaliation, Arab tribes in the region employed heavy weaponry to target PKK/YPG positions, further escalating tensions in an already volatile area. These clashes underscore the complex and multifaceted nature of the conflict in Syria’s Deir Ezzor province, with various armed groups vying for control and influence.
