GENEVA: North Korea’s United Nations (UN) envoy accused the US and South Korea on Tuesday of pushing the Korean peninsula closer to the brink of nuclear war.

The envoy told the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that as a result of this, his nation had no choice but to further accelerate a build-up of its self-defense capabilities.

Ambassador Kim Song told the last day of the annual UN gathering of world leaders that the year 2023 has been recorded as an extremely dangerous year. Korean peninsula is in a hair-trigger situation with imminent risk of nuclear war.

He said that due to the prevailing circumstances, North Korea is urgently required to further accelerate the build-up of its self-defense capabilities to defend itself.

North Korea’s ballistic missile tests

North Korea has tested dozens of ballistic missiles in the past eighteen months. The US has long warned it was ready to carry out a 7th nuclear test.

North Korea says it is exercising its right to self-defense with its ballistic missile tests to protect its sovereignty and security interests from military threats.
