BEIJING: In a recent exchange between U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Schumer expressed disappointment with China’s response to the recent Hamas attack on Israel. Schumer, leading a delegation of six senators to China, conveyed his concern about China’s statement, which did not demonstrate any sympathy or support for Israel.US

The delegation, comprising both Democrats and Republicans, marks the first visit by U.S. lawmakers to China since 2019, arriving at a time of heightened scrutiny and criticism of China in the American Congress. This surge in attention comes amidst China’s rise as a significant global power.

During the dialogue, Schumer urged China and its people to stand in solidarity with the Israeli population and unequivocally condemn the recent acts of violence perpetrated by Hamas. The Hamas surprise attack early Saturday has resulted in a devastating toll of casualties, leaving over 1,100 dead and thousands wounded on both sides.

In response to the violence, China issued a statement on Sunday, urging restraint and an immediate cessation of hostilities from both parties. However, the statement did not acknowledge the Hamas attack or its brutal aftermath. China emphasized the need to establish an independent state of Palestine as the fundamental solution to the ongoing conflict.

Schumer reiterated the urgency of condemning the recent Hamas attack and emphasized the importance of reinvigorating the peace process. He highlighted the critical need for the international community to act promptly and facilitate the resumption of peace talks.

Both governments are currently in discussions to arrange a meeting between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping during an upcoming regional summit in San Francisco. This meeting aims to navigate the increasingly complex relationship between the two nations.

Traditionally, China has supported the Palestinian cause while strengthening ties with Israel to advance trade, technology, and diplomacy. Schumer expressed his disappointment in China’s lack of support for Israel during these tumultuous times, asserting that a fair trade relationship is the top priority for the Senate delegation.
