WASHINGTON: The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear Donald Trump’s appeal of a ruling by Colorado’s court that would keep him off the presidential primary vote in the western state, western media reported on Friday.

The conservative-majority apex court, which includes three justices appointed by Donald Trump, said it would hear arguments in the high-stakes election case on February 8, 2024.

The Colorado court stopped Donald Trump earlier from appearing on the Republican presidential primary vote in the state due to his role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by his workers and supporters.

Lawyers for the former President, the frontrunner for the upcoming Republican presidential nomination, asked the US apex court earlier this week to hear the case and “immediately reverse the Colorado Court’s verdict.”

The US states of Maine and Colorado have stopped him from standing in presidential primaries on the grounds that Trump had engaged in insurrection over the Capitol events. However, the former President has challenged both verdicts.

Colorado and Maine hold their presidential nominating contests on March 5 when voters over a dozen states, including Texas and California, go to the elections.

The state of Maine blocked former president Donald Trump from its Republican presidential primary over his role in the January 2021 attack on the US Capitol. The verdict was announced by the state’s top election official and blocked Trump from its Republican presidential primary.

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said in a verdict that the events of January 6, 2021 took place at the behest of, and with the knowledge and help of, the outgoing President Trump,” saying “The US Constitution does not accept an attack on the foundations of their government.
