ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: The United States (US) has said that Pakistan has right to savegaurd itself from terrorism as a country that has suffered tremendously from terrorist attacks.
US stance on terrorism in Pakistan
A statement from the US comes a day after Islamabad threatened to target Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant group in Afghanistan if Kabul does not take action to dismantle them. A National Security Committee (NSC) meeting, under the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, has asked the government in Kabul without naming it not to provide safe havens to Pakistani militant groups on its soil.
Pakistan had witnessed a sharp rise in terror incidents, especially in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, during a previous couple of months after the TTP declared ending the ceasefire with Pakistan.
We are aware of the recent statement by the Pakistani National Security Committee, the US State Department’s spokesman Ned Price said, speaking at a weekly press briefing in Washington. Pakistani citizens have suffered tremendously from militant attacks. Pakistan’s government has the right to defend itself from terrorism.
Price said that the US calls on Taliban to uphold their commitment they have made that Afghan land has never again been used as a launchpad for international terrorist attacks. He said these are among the commitments the Taliban government has been unable or unwilling to fulfill to date.
