ISLAMABAD: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Moscow and Washington are in talks over potential collaboration in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, with possible joint projects not only in Russia’s Arctic territories but also in Alaska.

Speaking at a meeting with workers from the nuclear industry, Putin highlighted the role of Novatek, one of Russia’s major players in LNG production, according to the TASS news agency.

“We have several companies, namely the Novatek company, which is one of our big companies working in the field of natural gas liquefaction,” he said. “Notably, this work is carried out in cooperation with many partners, both European and Asian ones,” he added.

Shared interest

His remarks come as both Russia and the US express a shared interest in exploring economic opportunities, even as relations remain tense over the Ukraine conflict, which has yet to see significant diplomatic progress following the August 15 summit with Trump.

He further noted that discussions with the United States were underway regarding joint efforts in this field. “By the way, we are discussing with our American partners the possibility of working together in this field, not only in our Arctic zone but also in Alaska,” the president stated.

Distinctive technologies

Putin also pointed out that Russia possesses distinctive technologies in LNG production that have drawn interest from international partners, including those in the US “The Arctic zone, the Northern Sea Route and your work there have great prospects and they are developing at a very good pace,” he said.

“Huge, huge” mineral reserves

While the Russian leader did not specify what kind of cooperation was being considered, he emphasised the presence of “huge, huge” mineral reserves in the Arctic and referenced Novatek’s ongoing activities in the region.

“We are discussing, by the way, with American partners the possibility of working together in this area. And not only in our Arctic zone, but also in Alaska. And at the same time, the technologies that we possess, today no one but us possesses. And this is of interest to our partners, including those from the States,” Putin reiterated.
