WASHINGTON: The US State Department has reiterated its position on the current legal proceedings against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder, adding that it is a matter for the courts in Pakistan to decide.

“As we have stated several times, legal proceedings against the former PM are matters for the courts in Pakistan to decide,” State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said. He also rejected the accusations of US involvement in Imran Khan’s ouster. He said, “The accusations that Washington played any role in his removal from office are untrue.”

The Spokesperson further said that he has addressed the matter “any number of times”, and that “ultimately Pakistani politics is a matter for the people in Pakistan to decide as per their laws and constitution”.

The spokesperson also addressed the recent remarks of Canadian government against India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah. Miller said that the US would hold talks with its neighbors on the matter. The Spokesperson described them as “concerning”.

Earlier, a Canadian top official said that the Indian Home Minster, Amit Shah, was behind the extrajudicial killing of its citizen, a Sikh separatist leader that advocated for the Khalistan movement. According to media reports, an assassination was also attempted against a US national, who supported the Khalistan movement.
