Jordan receives $845 million from the US under annual financial support

The United States is going to provide Jordan with more than 845 million dollars in annual financial support, officials in Amman said on Sunday, as the country relies heavily on foreign aid.

AFP reports Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh was at the signing ceremony of the “agreement with the United States under which $ 845.1 will be provided”, according to a statement from the Jordanian government.

Zeina Toukan who is Minister of Planning and International Cooperation and USAID official Margaret Spears signed the agreement in Amman, he added.

The Hashemite Kingdom was the main link between the West and the Middle East. “Jordan is very thankful for the support, which shows that the US always understands the challenges faced by Jordan”, Khasawneh said.

Washington will contribute at the end of the month, Toukan said, adding that the money will go “to support financial development projects and to implement economic reforms in different regions.” In September, the United States pledged $10.15 billion in aid to Jordan between 2023 and 2029.

Larger than Portugal, Jordan has few natural resources and only one port, Aqaba, on the Red Sea. The World Bank says the country is heavily indebted and faces an unemployment rate of around 23%.

About 675,000 refugees from neighboring war-torn Syria are registered by the United Nations in Jordan. Amman puts the actual figure at about double that and says the cost of their admission is more than $12 billion.
