WASHINGTON: A US prosecutor will seek indictment of President Joe Biden’s son Hunter by the end of September, Western media reported on Thursday.

The case is a major concern for the US President as he is heading for his re-election campaign.

David Weiss, the US special counsel said the government would request for a grand jury indictment before the September 29 deadline under the Speedy Trial Act.

Weiss in a report to US District Judge Maryellen Noreika said the government wants to seek the return of an indictment in the case.

Judge Noreika in July had rejected a plea deal that was aimed to resolve the tax and gun charges against Hunter Biden, raising concerns over its validity.

Under the proposed plea agreement Hunter Biden would have to plead guilty for not paying taxes on $US1.5 million in income between 2017 and 2018 along with entering into a separate deferred prosecution agreement for unlawfully owning a firearm while using drugs.

US Attorney appoints David Weiss as special counsel

US Attorney General Merrick Garland earlier keeping in view the extraordinary circumstances in the case appointed David Weiss as special counsel to pursue the investigation.

Hunter Biden has been facing probe in Congress for his business deals in China, Ukraine, and other countries states when his father served as vice president from 2009 to 2017.

A former business associate has recently told Congress that Hunter had arranged several telephone calls between his father and his foreign partners.

The Republican opponents say Joe Biden exploited his position to support his son. Biden has always refused the allegations.

If the trial begins Biden would be campaigning for reelection in November 2024, most probably against former president Donald Trump who is also facing at least three criminal trials next year.
