UNITED NATIONS: The United States has presented a counterproposal at the United Nations Security Council, urging for a temporary ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and opposing a significant ground offensive by Israel in Rafah.

The resolution, aims to address mounting concerns over civilian casualties and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The US draft resolution calls for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the release of all hostages held by Hamas as a precondition. It echoes language used by President Joe Biden in recent discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The resolution emphasizes the need to lift barriers hindering the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza. It highlights the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis affecting civilians, particularly in light of the potential impact of a major ground offensive in Rafah.

The US administration intends to allow time for negotiations and does not plan an immediate vote on the resolution. The proposal reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts to broker a truce and mitigate further escalation of the conflict.

The resolution expresses grave concerns over Israel’s plans to launch a major ground offensive in Rafah, warning of the severe consequences for civilian populations and regional stability.

The draft resolution rejects any attempts to alter the demographic or territorial makeup of Gaza in violation of international law. It condemns calls for Jewish settlers to relocate to Gaza and opposes actions aimed at reducing Gaza’s territory or demolishing civilian infrastructure.

The proposed resolution underscores the pressing need for a cessation of hostilities and concerted efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. While Washington traditionally supports Israel at the UN, the move signals a departure from its previous stance and reflects growing international pressure to resolve the conflict and protect civilian lives.
