ISLAMABAD: United States President Joe Biden, in a bid to counter China in Africa, was set to disclose a plan that would see America offering making a long-term commitment to African leaders. This move will come at the heels of an announcement by American companies regarding $2 billion worth of technology deals.
Forty-nine African leaders had gathered in Washing for a continent-wide summit last witnessed in 2014 when Barack Obama was the US president.
US President for boosting support for African Union
As per a White House statement, Biden will reveal details about a support outlay of $55 billion for African countries. This project will run for the next few years. Initiatives planned will include health workers’ training along with initiatives regarding climate.
Biden is expected to upgrade US support for the African Union. One such initiative would be a permanent seat on the G20.
On Tuesday, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned African leaders that Russia and China’s activities were “destabilizing” the African continent.
