Washington: President Joe Biden on Saturday hailed the moon landing of a US spacecraft as a historic achievement for US-led space exploration.
The unmanned Odysseus lander, built by a private company and funded by NASA, touched down near the moon on Thursday, more than 50 years after the agency’s closest cosmic mission, Apollo 17, landed on Earth.
Biden described the landing, carried out in cooperation with NASA, as “an exciting step in a new era in space exploration.” Private and public sectors.
“American creativity, innovation and curiosity made this possible,” he said in a statement. “The United States is taking the world back to the moon.”
The golf cart-sized Odysseus appears to be lying on its side on the moon, and ground controllers have worked to download data and surface images from the moon. Its creators say it’s a robot.
Intuitive Machines initially said the hex plane was correct, but its CEO later said the announcement was based on incorrect data.
Odysseus is seen standing on his feet and bending over, the top of which rests horizontally on a small rock – this dwarfs the feat.
