WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden has called for a long-term partnership with Africa both in trade and good governance.

Addressing a summit in Washington on Wednesday, Biden avoided mentioning China’s name but made it clear that the United States would take a different approach as United States businesses unveiled projects worth billions of dollars for the continent. As many as 49 African leaders attended the summit. This was the first such gathering since Barack Obama invited African leaders in 2014.

The United States president said his country sought “partnerships — not to create political obligation, to foster dependence, but to spur shared success and opportunity.” “When Africa succeeds, the United States succeeds. The whole world succeeds,” Biden added. — AFP/APP
