WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House on Thursday for bilateral talks, where they discussed a range of issues, including Italy’s strong support for Ukraine and cooperation on climate change.
During the meeting, President Biden expressed his gratitude for Italy’s unwavering support of Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. He praised Prime Minister Meloni for her country’s commitment to defending against Russian atrocities and standing up for international law.
“It’s not just a war. Russia is committing atrocities,” President Biden stated during the talks. “I want to thank the Italian people for supporting you and supporting Ukraine. It makes a big difference.”
Western Nations’ Support for Ukraine
Prime Minister Meloni acknowledged the importance of Western nations coming together in the wake of Russia’s war on Ukraine. She highlighted Italy’s active role in defending international law and promoting peaceful coexistence among nations. “Supporting Ukraine means defending the peaceful coexistence of people and states everywhere in the world,” Meloni affirmed.
In addition to their discussions on Ukraine, the two leaders addressed the pressing issue of climate change and the increasingly extreme weather patterns affecting the world. They also explored matters related to bilateral trade and defense cooperation.
Italy plays a significant role in hosting American troops, with 30,000 US military personnel and Defense Department employees and their families stationed at five bases in the country. Italy is the second-largest host of American forces in Europe, with Germany being the largest, hosting over 35,000 troops.
