WASHINGTON: Former US President Donald Trump has severely criticized appointment of a special counsel by the US Justice Department to oversee criminal probes related to him (Trump), media reported on Saturday.

The former President termed the appointment as political and unfair and said that it is not acceptable to him. He said that it is unfair, political, and unacceptable. He said that it is the worst form of politicization of justice in the US.
He expressed hope that his party (Republicans) will show the courage to fight against it. The former US President issued his statements following Attorney General Merrick Garland named Jack Smith former crime investigator as a special counsel to supervise two federal criminal investigations into Trump.

The new development came as Donald Trump announced to run for the White House race in 2024. Reports said that special counsels are appointed from time to time in order to probe politically sensitive matters.
In a statement, Jack Smith said that he will accelerate the probe and exercise independent judgment as per law. Garland said that Smith will supervise the probe into Donald Trump’s handling of official documents following leaving Washington and the investigation into attempts to intervene with the peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 elections.
