NEW YORK: An American nurse and her daughter who were kidnapped in Haiti in July were released by their abductors, the El Roi Haiti nonprofit Christian group the woman was working for said on Wednesday.

Alix Dorsainvil was working for El Roi Haiti when she and her young daughter were abducted in late last month. She is the wife of the founder of the group, Sandro Dorsainvil.

According to the witnesses, Dorsainvil was working in the group’s small brick clinic when armed men burst in and abucted her on 27 July, US media reported.

El Roi Haiti said in its blog post that it is with immense joy that the El Roi Haiti confirm the safe release of Alix Dorsainvil and her child who were held hostage in Port au Prince. However, the organization did not provide any information about how they were released and when they might return to their home country from Haiti.

The abduction quickly drew anger from the local community in the area that Dorsainvil was there to help. Nearly 200 Haitians marched through Port-au-Prince several days after the kidnapping to vent their anger and demand the abducters release the USnurse and her daughter.

Disturbing data of kidnapping in Haiti

Some members of the community claimed the abductors had asked for one million dollars in ransom for duo, which is a common practice for the armed gangs that have run amok in the capital of Haiti since the killing of the small nation’s president in 2021. There have been hundreds of abductions in the country this year, including eight-three in July alone, according to the nonprofit Center for Analysis and Research in Human Rights.

The group said that least fifty-one foreign nationals from 4 countries were abducted from January until the beginning of August this year.
