WASHINGTON: According to the latest warning from United States homeland security officials, simmering grievances, political divides, the steady proliferation of online neo-Nazi propaganda, and the approach of the 2024 presidential election are keeping the United States stuck in a “heightened serious threat environment.”

According to Voice of America, the Department of Homeland Security has reissued a National Terrorism Advisory System bulletin, saying a combination of anger, ideologies, and opportunities “pose the persistent and lethal threat to the Homeland.”

This is the eighth time the Department of Homeland Security has issued the bulletin since 2021, with this advisory replacing the previous warning issued in November.

It comes just days after a 19-year-old person from Missouri crashed a rented truck into the White House security barrier before waving the Nazi flag. The nation marks the first anniversary of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 children and two teachers.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said, “Recent tragic events highlight the continued heightened threat environment our nation faces.”

He said, “These threats are driven by violent high extremists who seek to further their ideological beliefs and personal grievances, and we’re working with partners across every level of government, within the private sector, and in local communities to keep Americans safe.”

As with the last advisories, the latest bulletin warns that the massive threat comes from individuals and small groups prepared to act on personal grievances and ideological beliefs.

“We continue to hear and see calls from violent extremists based on ideological views, calls for violence,” according to the senior official, who briefed reporters on the condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the Department of Homeland Security. “The tempo and the seriousness of those types of calls are still high and happening regularly.”
