WASHINGTON:  A US intelligence assessment has said that some 315,000 Russian troops have been killed or injured in Ukraine since the war started in February 2022.

A congressional source on Tuesday said the Russian military has also lost some 2,200 tanks.

The document surfaced in media at a time when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in US to seek Washington’s funding.

Zelensky on Tuesday met with congressional leaders before scheduled talks at the White House with President Joe Biden.

In last assessment in July 2022 the CIA director Bill Burns said US intelligence estimated that about 15,000 Russian troops were killed.

Russia, Ukraine hesitant to provide casualty figures

Both Russia and Ukraine have been hesitant to provide casualty figures from the war.

Russian casualties of 315,000 killed or wounded would amount to 87 percent of the country’s pre-war force.

The Wall Street Journal, referring to the US intelligence assessment, said the conflict in Ukraine has give a huge set back Russian effort to modernize its ground force.

Russia, to make up heavy losses, has taken extraordinary measures such as sending them to the front.
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson after a meeting with Zelensky said that his party would not approve Biden’s request for $60 billion in latest assistance for Ukraine unless Democrats meet their demands on immigration.
