MILAN: More than fifty passengers on a flight from China to Italy have tested positive for COVID-19 – as Beijing prepares to open up its borders.
Italian health officials will start testing all arrivals from China for Covid-19 following almost half of the passengers on two flights to Milan tested positive.
Health officials said on Wednesday on the first flight to Malpensa that tested passengers from China out of 62 people 35 were Covid-19 positive while on the second flight 62 were positive out of 120.
US and Covid-19
Italy’s government is set to hold a discussion on the Milan passenger numbers at a cabinet meeting. Reports said that Health Minister Orazio Schillaci is likely to present information on the matter.
Local media said that there is increasing concern among health officials about new Covid variants. Italy was the first European country to be hit hard by Covid-19 in early 2020.

On Wednesday evening the United States (US) became the fifth country to enforce restrictions on Chinese passengers – as the country (China) prepares to reopen its borders. China’s announcement means millions of its citizens could fly abroad for next month’s New Year holiday.
Tighter steps have also been taken by Japan, Italy, Taiwan, Malaysia, and India. After almost 3 years of restrictions, Beijing will let people travel more easily from 8 January, 2023.
