WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives, stalled in a messy leadership battle, rejected Republican candidate Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday as a minor group of holdouts in the party challenged former President Donald Trump’s plea for unity.
Despite Trump’s request, Kevin McCarthy fell short in three consecutive votes for the speaker following three losing votes on Tuesday, as twenty Republicans on the party’s right flank denied to back a candidate, they thought ideologically untrustworthy.

The legislators then voted to break until 8 p.m. on Thursday while they pursue a solution behind closed doors. Republican Representative Jeff Van Drew, who is also a McCarthy supporter told the media that they have either got to get some real discussion going with a select group of persons, or they have got to get everyone back in the caucus room and start beating of each other.

The leadership battle has provided a depressing start for the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives following the party managed to secure a thin majority in the chamber in November’s midterm polls. Former President Donald Trump said that it is now time for all of their “GREAT Republican House Members” to “VOTE FOR KEVIN”.
