WASHINGTON: American forces conducted strikes in Yemen targeting 10 attack drones and a ground control station affiliated with the Houthis, according to an announcement by the US military.

The USS Carney, a US warship, intercepted an anti-ship missile launched by the Houthis. The strikes aimed to counter an imminent threat posed by the Houthis unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to merchant vessels and US Navy ships in the region. Additionally, a Houthis surface-to-air missile threatening US aircraft was destroyed in Houthis-controlled areas of Yemen.

The Houthis have been carrying out persistent attacks on Red Sea shipping since November, justifying their actions as support for Palestinians in Gaza. The US and UK responded with strikes against Houthis positions, leading the Houthis to declare American and British interests as legitimate targets. The United States established a multinational naval task force to safeguard Red Sea shipping from Houthis attacks, which have continued despite diplomatic and financial pressure.

The recent military actions indicate an escalation in tensions between the US, Iran, and the Houthis. The Houthis claim to have targeted an American merchant ship bound for Israel, while the US emphasizes the need to protect shipping lanes and neutralize threats from Houthis-controlled territory. The conflict reflects broader regional tensions fueled by anger over Israel’s actions in Gaza, contributing to violence involving groups in various Middle Eastern countries.
