ISLAMABAD: Two people were injured on Thursday when a federal agent with US Customs and Border Protection opened fire during a targeted stop in Portland, Oregon.
Authorities said the vehicle was allegedly connected to criminal activity, and the driver attempted to use the car as a weapon against law enforcement, reports AFP.
The shooting occurred around 2:18 p.m. local time near Southeast Main Street. Police responding to reports of gunshot victims found a man and woman with apparent injuries. The victims then drove to a nearby apartment complex, where emergency personnel assisted. Their current condition has not been released.
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson called for federal immigration operations to be suspended in the city until a full, independent investigation is completed. “Our community deserves answers,” he said. Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield announced a parallel inquiry to determine whether federal officers acted outside the scope of their lawful authority.
Portland Police Chief Bob Day said local authorities are still gathering facts and urged residents to remain calm. “We understand the heightened emotion in the wake of the Minneapolis incident, but we are in the early stages of this investigation,” he said.
The shooting follows a fatal federal officer-involved incident in Minneapolis, a day earlier, which has triggered protests across the US. The incidents have intensified scrutiny of federal law enforcement actions amid growing concern over civil unrest.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is assisting in the investigation. Meanwhile, Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez confirmed his office will monitor the case to ensure evidence is preserved and all facts are documented.
