WASHINGTON: The US State Department has said that the Special Representative for Afghanistan, Tom West, and Special Envoy for Women, Girls, and Human Rights in Afghanistan, Rina Amiri, will attend the Doha meeting.

At a media briefing, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said that the United States strongly supports the resolution’s call for a UN special envoy for Afghanistan.

US Envoys’ Participation in Previous Meeting

Tom West and Rina Amiri attended the last UN secretary-general’s meeting of Afghanistan envoys in May 2023, and they will attend the next one this month in Doha. The meeting follows the UN Security Council resolution on Afghanistan passed in December last year.

Miller said that a special envoy would be well-positioned to coordinate global engagement in Afghanistan to achieve the objectives laid out in this resolution.
