ISLAMABAD: US envoy to Pakistan, Donald Blome visited the Gomal Zam Dam in South Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday. The dam is a joint project of the United States and Pakistan governments that has yielded remarkable results, APP reported.
US-Pakistan “Green Alliance” framework
Under the US-Pakistan “Green Alliance” framework, the two nations are working together to advance clean energy, water management, and climate-smart agriculture initiatives. The project has doubled agricultural production in the area by opening 191,000 more acres for local farmers.
It has also controlled the possible flood damage for more than 30,000 households, dramatically increased the water storage capacity of Pakistan, and provided electricity for 20,000 homes.
The envoy said that the US was immensely proud of its 130-million-dollar collaboration with Pakistan on the Gomal Zam Multi-purpose project, including irrigation infrastructure and direct support to surrounding populations.
With the generation of additional seventeen megawatts of hydropower, the dam provides a reliable, clean energy source and empowers local farmers to improve their socio-economic conditions.
The United States Agency for International Development invested 130 million dollars in the dam, and agriculture development components, including irrigation infrastructure.
He was accompanied by Water and Power Development Authority Chairman Lt. General (retd) Sajjad Ghani, and the Secretary of the Agriculture Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Muhammad Javed Marwat.
