BAGHDAD: The US embassy in Baghdad faced a rocket attack in the early hours of Friday, marked by two salvos of rockets. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, according to a spokesperson from the embassy. The attack is suspected to have been carried out by militias in Iraq, although no group has claimed immediate responsibility.

This incident marks the first reported rocket attack against the US embassy since mid-October when Muslim militias initiated a series of attacks against US forces on military bases in Iraq and neighboring Syria. The militias, operating under the banner of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, have attributed more than 70 such attacks to Washington’s support of Israel in its conflict with Gaza.

The US embassy spokesperson urged the Government of Iraq to take all necessary measures to protect diplomatic and coalition partner personnel and facilities. Explosions were heard near the embassy, located in the central part of Iraq’s capital, at approximately 4 a.m. on Friday. Videos circulating on social media captured sirens activating, signaling people to take cover.

Aside from its diplomatic staff, the United States maintains around 2,500 troops in Iraq with a mission focused on advising and assisting local forces. The embassy spokesperson emphasized the right to self-defense and the protection of personnel worldwide, reiterating the commitment to ensuring the safety of its diplomatic and military presence.
