WASHINGTON: United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has rejected Iran’s claim that it shot down an American F-15 fighter jet near Tehran, describing the reports circulating online as “baseless and not true.”

The statement was issued on the social media platform X after Iranian sources alleged that their air defences had brought down a US fighter jet during the ongoing conflict. However, US defence officials said no American aircraft had been shot down and dismissed the claim as misinformation.

“An IRGC leader has claimed that a US F-15 was shot down today south of Tehran. LIE,” Centcom has said. “No US fighter aircraft have been shot down by Iran. US forces continue to exercise air superiority over vast swaths of Iran. TRUTH.”

Tensions in the Gulf region have escalated following coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28. The attacks have further reduced hopes for a diplomatic resolution to Tehran’s long-running dispute with Western countries and Israel over its nuclear programme.

In response, Iran announced it was targeting American military bases in several Gulf states. These strikes were strongly condemned by the affected countries, which reported that some attacks damaged civilian infrastructure.
