WAHINGTON: The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has acknowledged the emotional toll that the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas has taken on US diplomats, as there have been reports of internal disagreement over Washington’s handling of the situation.
In a letter sent to all State Department employees, Blinken described the circumstances as “challenging” for the US diplomatic corps, some of whom have experienced the “ripples of fear and bigotry” generated by the conflict.
US leaders, including President Joe Biden and Blinken, have publicly expressed strong support for Israel, which involved a sustained bombing campaign in the populated area of Gaza.
At least one State Department official, Josh Paul, left his position due to a “policy disagreement concerning our continued lethal assistance to Israel.”
Blinken’s letter was not a direct response to the reports of frustration within the department, according to a source familiar with the matter.
In his letter, Blinken discussed his recent visit to the Middle East, where he traveled between Israel and several Arab countries, some of which he visited multiple times.
US Supports Israel Attacks
He acknowledged that the ongoing situation has been both professionally and personally challenging for many State Department employees.
Blinken emphasized that the United States mourns the loss of every innocent life in the conflict and reaffirmed support for Israel.
He also encouraged open debate and dissent within the department, stating that it contributes to better policies and institutions.
Blinken acknowledged the potential for increased turmoil and strife in the future. Reports this week have indicated dissatisfaction among State Department employees regarding US policy toward the conflict, with some suggesting the possibility of a “mutiny” within the department.
