TAIPEI, Taiwan: Sandra Oudkirk, the outgoing director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), emphasized the escalating tensions fueled by China’s actions in various regions, including Taiwan, Japan, and the South China Sea.

Oudkirk underscored the inherent risks associated with such provocative maneuvers, cautioning that they could lead to unintended conflicts or miscalculations with far-reaching consequences.

The United States, as a key ally of Taiwan and a proponent of regional stability, has consistently advocated for maintaining the status quo in the region and beyond.

Oudkirk reiterated the US commitment to peace and stability in the region, urging China to refrain from coercive tactics and provocative behavior.

Despite not having formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, the US remains deeply invested in its security and defence. Oudkirk emphasized the importance of bolstering Taiwan’s ability to defend itself, making it a top priority for the AIT.

Looking ahead, Raymond Greene, Oudkirk’s successor, will step into his role with a firm understanding of the complexities surrounding US-Taiwan relations. As the incoming director of the AIT, Greene’s familiarity with Taiwan and regional dynamics will be instrumental in navigating the ongoing geopolitical tensions and ensuring continued US support for Taiwan’s security.

Oudkirk’s remarks underscore the gravity of the situation in the Indo-Pacific region, highlighting the need for diplomatic efforts to mitigate tensions and prevent any escalation that could destabilize the region.
