ADRE: The US ambassador to the UN met Sudanese refugees fleeing violence on Wednesday and vowed Washington would “do everything in our capacity to prevent and respond to atrocities” in the war in Sudan.

On a visit to Adre in Chad on the border with Sudan, Linda Thomas-Greenfield has announced high-profile new sanctions targeting the deputy head of Sudan’s RSF – and brother of the RSF commander over human rights violations.

She added the US would give an additional $163 million in aid and asked others to step up. The UN said half of Sudan’s people need help and has asked for $2.6 billion – so far, it has collected only 26% of this amount.

The United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed that the ongoing months-long conflict in Sudan has led to the displacement of more than 5 million people. The situation has continued to deteriorate as clashes between Sudan’s military and a rival paramilitary force persist, with no signs of easing.

According to the IOM, over 4 million individuals have been internally displaced within Sudan since the conflict erupted in mid-April. In addition, approximately 1.1 million people have fled to neighboring countries seeking refuge. Among those who have sought safety abroad, more than 750,000 have crossed into either Egypt or Chad, according to the agency’s data.
