WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warnings of a risk of nuclear conflict terming them as irresponsible, but added there was no sign of greater risk.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told media that this is not the first time Vladimir Putin has made irresponsible rhetoric.

He added this not a proper way for the leader of a nuclear-armed country to speak. He said that US has conveyed in the past privately and directly to Russia about the consequences of the use of a nuclear weapon.

However, Miller added that there were no signs that Russia was preparing to use a nuclear weapon.

Putin, during an address to the nation on Thursday, warned the West of serious consequences for any state that sends troops into Ukraine to defend against Russia.

He said everything coming up from the West creates the actual threat of a conflict with the use of nuclear weapons, and thus the annihilation of civilization.
