WASHINGTON, USA: The US criticized the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) opinion that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal, arguing it complicates peace efforts.

A State Department spokesperson stated that while the U.S. acknowledges Israel’s government support for settlements as inconsistent with international law and a hindrance to peace, the court’s extensive opinion might impede conflict resolution.

On Friday, the ICJ declared Israel’s occupation and settlements illegal, demanding a swift end. This is the court’s strongest stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to date. The State Department countered, emphasizing that the ICJ’s call for Israel’s immediate withdrawal contradicts the established framework considering Israel’s security needs, highlighted by the October 7 Hamas attacks which resulted in significant casualties and hostages.

Though non-binding, the ICJ’s advisory opinion holds substantial international legal weight and may reduce support for Israel. The State Department reiterated that direct negotiations are essential for peace. ICJ President Nawaf Salam affirmed that Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem violate international law, as per the findings of the 15-judge panel.
