WASHINGTON: In an effort to avert a partial government shutdown, US Congress has unveiled a bipartisan spending measure totaling $1.1 trillion, covering critical areas such as defense, homeland security, and various other programs. The announcement comes after days of delay, providing lawmakers with a tight timeframe to enact the necessary legislation.

The comprehensive spending package, comprising six bills, addresses approximately two-thirds of the $1.66 trillion in discretionary government spending for the current fiscal year, which commenced on October 1. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is set to vote on the expansive package on Friday, with the Democratic-majority Senate facing a time crunch to pass the legislation within a matter of hours.

Reflecting on the bipartisan effort behind the spending measure, the top Senate negotiators, Democrat Patty Murray and Republican Susan Collins, emphasized the significance of the compromise in bolstering various facets of American society. They underscored the package’s investment in the American people, economic development, community safety, and national security, emphasizing its role in strengthening the nation’s global leadership.

However, concerns loom over the long-term fiscal outlook, as highlighted by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The CBO’s forecast warns of significant growth in US deficits and debt over the next three decades, with the nation’s current $34.5 trillion national debt poised to increase substantially. Presently, the national debt stands at around 99% of GDP, a figure that could surge to 166% of GDP by the year 2054 if current trends persist.
