BEIJING: US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has arrived in China in a bid to cool down trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies, Western media reported on Monday.
She is scheduled to hold important meetings with Chinese counterparts to resolve trade differences between Beijing and Washington.
It is part of a series of high-level visits of US officials to China. Earlier US President Joe Biden had announced to meet China’s Xi Jinping this year.
Raimondo was received by Director General Lin Feng of the American and Oceania Affairs Department of China’s Ministry of Commerce upon her arrival at the airport.
Raimondo visit to help resolve issues in US-China commercial relationship
US Commerce Department last week hoped that the visit would help resolve issues relating to the US-China commercial relationship, challenges faced by US businesses, and areas for potential cooperation.
Raimondo will also visit China’s economic powerhouse Shanghai.
Earlier this month, President Biden issued an executive order to limit certain American investments in sensitive high-tech sectors within China, a move that Beijing criticized terming it as “anti-globalization.”

The anticipated regulations, set to take effect in the coming year, focus on semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
Efforts to promote a more stable relationship have led to diplomatic visits by prominent US officials. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited Beijing last month to discuss with Chinese authorities in detail about the forthcoming restrictions.
Yellen also discussed the need for fair economic competition and cooperation in addressing climate change concerns.
Notably, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Beijing in June witnessed some progress on key issues, although no major breakthroughs were achieved.
