WASHINGTON: United States (US) Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday that the Taliban in Afghanistan are trying to sentence Afghan women and girls to a dark future without any opportunity by stopping them from attending universities.

Talking to the media, he said that the Taliban government in Afghanistan will not improve its ties with the world unless they (the Taliban) reverse the ban on women’s higher education.

He warned the Taliban that Washington will impose costs on the Taliban if it fails to reverse ban on women’s higher education in Afghanistan.

He said that no country can achieve progress if it deprives half of its population of the opportunity to contribute and support.

But the decision to bar university education for girls and women, announced in this week, sparked anger worldwide, including from many Muslim nations that asked the Taliban to reverse its decision.

Taliban defended the decision to ban women from higher education and said that they want to protect women’s honour and national interest. In his first public comment, Taliban Minister for Education Nida Mohammad Nadim said that they took the decision as many students were not following the instructions including the proper dress code.

Blinken said that the ban will affect any chance of Taliban improving relations with the rest of the world.
