WASHINGTON: The United States (US) has unveiled a new $1.2 billion military assistance package for Ukraine aimed at bolstering the country’s air defenses and providing additional artillery ammunition.
The announcement reflects the ongoing commitment of the US to Ukraine’s security, with a focus on both immediate and long-term capabilities to defend its territory and deter Russian aggression, according to the Defense Department.
The assistance package, funded through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, will be used for procuring equipment from the defense industry or partners rather than drawing from existing US stocks.
This approach ensures that US inventories are not depleted but may result in a longer timeline for assistance to reach the battlefield.
The specific components of the package include air defense systems and munitions, as well as equipment to integrate Western systems with Ukraine’s predominantly Soviet-era gear.
Additionally, it covers ammunition for counter-drone systems, 155 mm artillery rounds, and commercial satellite imagery services.
US at forefront in supporting Ukraine
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United States has been at the forefront of efforts to garner international support for Ukraine.
The US swiftly rallied an international coalition to back Kyiv and coordinated aid from numerous countries.
While some items, such as Patriot air defense systems and advanced heavy tanks, were eventually promised, others, like Western fighter aircraft, have not been committed thus far, despite Kyiv’s request.
The new aid package underscores the United States’ ongoing commitment to Ukraine’s security and aims to enhance its defense capabilities in the face of ongoing Russian aggression.
It also reinforces the international community’s support for Ukraine in its efforts to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
