WASHINGTON: More than 1,000 flights into and out of the United States on Monday have been canceled over a severe winter storm, with about half of the cancellations coming from Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N).

As many as 1,019 flights were scrapped as of 6:00 pm ET, flight-tracking service FlightAware said.

Low-cost carrier Southwest faced backlash from the US government earlier this month for canceling 16,700 flights over the holidays as it grappled with bad weather conditions and outdated technology.

The company has canceled about 12% of its Monday schedule, while American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) has canceled 6%, or 200 flights.

The fresh cancellations come as the US aviation sector recovers from a nationwide ground that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed over a computer issue.

797 flights to be canceled today

For Tuesday, so far 797 flights have been scheduled to be canceled into or out of the US.

Southwest Airlines and other major US airlines have issued winter weather waivers allowing customers to change their itinerary with no fare differences if they remain in the same cabin they had originally booked.
