ISLAMABAD: The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, has arrived at a US naval facility in Souda Bay on the Greek island of Crete, marking a significant show of American naval presence in the Eastern Mediterranean amid evolving regional security dynamics.

The nuclear-powered carrier, flagship of the US Navy’s newest class of supercarriers, docked at the strategically located base that serves as a critical logistics and operations hub for American and allied forces operating in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, according to AFP.

The deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford and its accompanying strike group comes at a time of heightened tensions across parts of the broader Mediterranean region, where conflicts and geopolitical rivalries continue to shape security calculations.

Designed to project power globally, the carrier can operate more than 75 aircraft, including advanced fighter jets, surveillance aircraft and helicopters.

Its enhanced electromagnetic aircraft launch system and advanced radar capabilities distinguish it from earlier Nimitz-class carriers, allowing for higher sortie generation rates and improved operational efficiency.

Souda Bay, located on Crete’s northwestern coast, is one of the most strategically important naval facilities in the Mediterranean.

The base provides deep-water port access and airfield support, enabling rapid deployment of naval and air assets across multiple theatres.

US officials have described such port calls as routine operations aimed at strengthening interoperability with NATO allies and maintaining maritime security.

Analysts note that the presence of a carrier strike group in the region also serves as a deterrent signal, demonstrating the United States’ ability to respond swiftly to emerging crises.

The USS Gerald R. Ford was commissioned in 2017 and represents a new generation of American aircraft carriers built to operate well into the 21st century.

With a displacement of approximately 100,000 tons and powered by two nuclear reactors, the vessel can operate for decades without refuelling, providing sustained forward presence.

For global observers, the carrier’s arrival in Crete underscores Washington’s continued commitment to safeguarding sea lanes, supporting allies and maintaining a balance of power in a region that remains central to global energy routes and security architecture.

Certain media reports stated that the carrier is also heading to the Middle East, as part of the US military build-up against Iran.

They see this development as the latest of the Trump Administration’s war posture, parallel to the ongoing talks with Iran, following several statements vowing to strike against the Islamic Republic.
