WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed on Tuesday that the United States is steadfastly pursuing a diplomatic solution to the ongoing political turmoil in Niger following an attempted coup by a junta. Blinken emphasized that diplomatic channels are the primary focus for resolving the crisis and restoring constitutional order.

During a press briefing at the State Department, Blinken stated, “We remain very focused on diplomacy for achieving the results that we want, which is the return to the constitutional order.” He expressed confidence in the continued viability of diplomatic efforts to address the situation.

Tensions in Niger have escalated, prompting regional intervention measures. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced the activation and deployment of a “standby force to restore constitutional order” in Niger during a recent summit meeting in Abuja, Nigeria.

US Stance on Niger Crisis

While addressing the ongoing developments, Blinken underscored the United States’ firm stance on the matter. He noted that it is “imperative” for the leaders of the coup in Niger to release the ousted president, Mohamed Bazoum, along with his family from detention. Additionally, Blinken stressed the importance of Niger’s return to constitutional order.

The United States is fully supportive of ECOWAS’ actions and initiatives in addressing the situation. Blinken expressed the US stance, saying, “We are in strong support of what ECOWAS is doing.”

As discussions continue within the international community, questions arose about the potential use of force by ECOWAS to address the crisis. Blinken, however, refrained from speculating on future actions, stating, “I would not get ahead of where we are now or get into any hypotheticals about what may happen in the future.”
