WASHINGTON, USA: The United States on Monday accused Iran of launching cyberattacks and influence operations aimed at disrupting the 2024 presidential election.

According to a joint statement from the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Iran has intensified its cyber activities, targeting the campaigns of both U.S. presidential candidates.

The statement confirmed earlier accusations by Donald Trump’s campaign, which reported that Iran had hacked one of its websites. The FBI launched an investigation, with Trump downplaying the breach, stating that only publicly available information was accessed. The intelligence community also reported that Iran targeted the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris, now the official Democratic nominee.

Iran denied the allegations, calling them “unsubstantiated” and claimed it had no intent to interfere with the U.S. election. However, the U.S. intelligence community remains confident that Iranian operatives engaged in social engineering tactics to infiltrate both campaigns, aiming to fan political discord within the American electorate. The operations reportedly included the theft and disclosure of information intended to influence the election process.
