UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council (UNSC) is scheduled to hold a vote today (Monday) regarding the authorization of an international force to assist Haiti’s police in addressing a security crisis driven by criminal gangs.
Kenya has volunteered to take the lead in forming a multi-national force consisting of 1,000 police officers. The Bahamas, Jamaica, and Antigua and Barbuda have committed to contributing personnel.
The United States has expressed its willingness to provide financial and logistical support for this initiative.
Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry urgently appealed to the Security Council during his address at the U.N. General Assembly last month, emphasizing the deteriorating security situation and its resulting humanitarian crisis.
Henry emphasized that establishing a combined force of police and military personnel would be an initial measure to restore a functional environment for the government.
He further highlighted the horrific activities of gangs, including massacres, kidnappings, human trafficking, and sexual violence.
