NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Tuesday denounced a ban by the Taliban administration on women attending universities or working for humanitarian groups and called for the full and equal participation of girls and women in Afghanistan.

In a statement, the council said the bar on girls and women attending schools and universities in Afghanistan “represents an increasing loss for the respect of fundamental freedoms and human rights.”

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also said that the restrictions were indefensible human rights violations and must be reserved.

He tweeted, “Actions to exclude and silence girls and women continue to cause huge suffering and major setbacks to the potential of the people of Afghanistan.”

The Security Council said a bar on women humanitarian workers, would have an important and immediate impact for humanitarian operations in Afghanistan,” including those of the United Nations (UN).
