NEW YORK: The United States on Wednesday asked the United Nations Security Council to take practical step to end a year-long war in Sudan between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The US accused warring parties of committing war crimes saying the RSF and allied militias have also committed crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing.

The UN says that about 25 million people, half of Sudan’s population need help and some 8 million have fled their homes and hunger is increasing.

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield has said that Sudan is an urgent issue of peace and security that demands attention from the Security Council.

She said the council must act urgently to end human suffering, hold culprits accountable, and bring the war to an end in Sudan. She said the time is running out to act in Sudan.

Since war began on April 15, 2023, the Security Council has only issued three statements denouncing and expressing concern about the conflict.

According to a UN sanctions monitors report, about 10,000 to 15,000 people were killed in one city alone in Sudan’s West Darfur last year in ethnic violence carried out by the RSF.

The Sudanese government recently banned aid deliveries through Chad, effectively closing down a crucial route for supplies to the vast Darfur region, which is under RSF control.
