KEY POINTS

  • India targeted and damaged the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project
  • Pakistan reaffirm its resolve to defend its citizens and sovereignty

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant-General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry on Wednesday laid bare the human toll, the violations of international law, and Pakistan’s unwavering resolve to defend its people and land.

“There would be no compromise on the safety of our citizens or the sovereignty of our land,” he categorically stated, adding that “India’s attacks on civilian populations and water infrastructure constitute clear violations of international laws, particularly the Geneva Conventions.”

Under the Geneva Convention, civilians and critical infrastructure like dams cannot be targeted during conflict. By attacking these, India has breached international humanitarian law, the ISPR chief argued.

Displaying visuals of the victims, including children, the ISPR chief asked, “Are these the terrorists India claimed to have targeted on May 6 and 7? Such actions are expected from India.”

He stated that India targeted and damaged the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project, a significant national asset.

He emphasised that India had challenged the brave nation of Pakistan, and this miscalculation would be corrected very soon.

He reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to defend itself against aggression. “Pakistan reserves the right to self-defence and will exercise it, when necessary,” Lt-Gen Chaudhry affirmed.

The military spokesman lauded the unity between the nation and its armed forces, stating, “Our forces are proud of the people, and the people have unwavering faith in their military. We are one against the enemy.”

Lives lost to state terrorism

Lt-Gen Chaudhry confirmed that 31 innocent Pakistani civilians were martyred and 57 sustained injuries following Indian attacks.

He added that the rise in casualties was due to India’s relentless ceasefire violations and unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC).

“Any condemnation of India’s strikes is not enough. The strikes of May 6 and 7 expose India’s disgusting face, showing that our enemy is so weak and scared that, like cowards, it targets civilians and population centres in the darkness of night instead of fighting the equivalent army in front of it,” he added.
