GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, is blessed with unique geography and climate that provide ideal conditions for growing distinctive dry fruits like apricots, almonds, walnuts, cherries, and berries. These dry fruits are not only a source of income but also a part of the local culture and heritage. What sets them apart is their exceptional nutritional value, packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making them a healthy snack option.

However, despite their potential, limited marketing exposure has hindered their economic growth. To tap into this potential, local communities must establish proper marketing channels. Investment in packaging and labeling, partnerships with national and international distributors, participation in world food expos, and the use of social media and e-marketing can help these unique dry fruits gain global recognition.

Gilgit

Many dry fruit producers in Gilgit-Baltistan follow sustainable farming practices, with organic orchards and traditional irrigation methods. Highlighting these practices can attract eco-conscious consumers. Challenges such as limited infrastructure, lack of awareness, and inadequate marketing strategies must be addressed to unlock the industry’s potential.

The government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can play a crucial role by providing financial support, technical assistance, and marketing expertise to local farmers and cooperatives. Proper marketing efforts can secure slots in international markets, potentially making Gilgit-Baltistan’s unique dry fruits sought-after delicacies globally.

Fazul Rehman, Director Agriculture and Livestock Gilgit Baltistan, mentioned that the region produces over 3,000 metric tons of dry apricots, 3,000 tons of almonds, and a staggering 100,000 tons of walnuts annually. These fruits are organic and pesticide-free, contributing to their superior quality and nutritional value. With proper infrastructure, quality standards, and training for local farmers, the region could potentially earn more from exports, benefiting both producers and consumers.

With the right strategies, support, and investment, Gilgit-Baltistan has the potential to become a global hub for high-quality dry fruits, contributing to national prosperity and global recognition.
